St. Paul’s Union Depot is currently being restored to its 1924 glory. My dad and I got to take a tour a few weeks ago to see the progress that has been made. It’s an incredible building and I look forward to seeing it finished and bustling with mass transit riders in early 2013.

Genna Strolls Along the Central Corridor
By Mike in Genevieve, TransitThose that know me well know that I have long had a love of mass transit and infrastructure. I’m certain that this is genetic, as my dad spent lots of time when he was younger learning about trains and photographing them. In fact, I think there are photos of me as a little boy, sitting in my stroller and looking at trains with him. As an adult, I spent four years living in New York and riding the subway nearly every single day and it honestly never got old for me. When I moved back to the Twin Cities, I actually missed the subway and the awesome infrastructure of New York City.
Lucky for me, we now live just blocks away from a $1 billion construction project: the Central Corridor Light Rail which will link St. Paul and Minneapolis. Though it won’t begin operating until 2014, construction recently began on the portion of the line that is closest to us. Today I took Genevieve out for a walk to observe the construction. I figured it was high time to share my love of mass transit with my little girl.
- “Dad, I see orange construction stuff. Let’s go check it out!”
- “What, there’s a backhoe, off my to my right?”
- “Which way is right again?”
- “Dad, I think pipes are cool, don’t you?”
- “Ooh! That’s awesome!”
- “I see that the Lexington station is proceeding along quite nicely.”
- “It looks good from this angle too.”
- “Dad, I think I’ve had enough infrastructure for one day.”
