in New York City - Manhattan
Coming from Minnesota, I certainly wasn't about to shut myself up all weekend just because of a few inches of the white stuff. I found several things to add to my list of things I find amusing about New York:
1) Instead of wearing hoods or hats, trendy New Yorkers hold umbrellas over their heads to shield them from the snow. Yes, umbrellas... in the snow! 2) Because of the heavy traffic on the streets and a lack of snowplows, the streets are covered with thousands of gallons of slush - more than I've seen even in MN. It's not quite cold enough to freeze into the hard packed snow and ice typically seen on Minnesota's streets and highways. 3) The metereologist on the news is standing in Central Park and saying there are whiteout conditions. I can see the trees behind him which are about 100 yards away. 4) Everyone is talking about how cold it is and it's not even below zero.
Those things made me laugh... but there are several things which make me smile:
1) The group of kids who have prepared a pile of snowballs to throw at the high school students who are about to be dismissed from the school across from my apartment. 2) Little kids sticking their tongues out to catch snowflakes.
..and lots of other things too, including the ice skaters at Rockefeller Center.
