Fort Totten Park - Housing

03/25/07

in New York City - Queens

I took a guided tour of Fort Totten Park in Queens yesterday, not to be confused with the other forts named after General Totten in North Dakota and Washington, DC. Today's photos are the first entry in a series of three.

Pictured here are some of the buildings within the park which were built in the latter half of the 1800s. The first building was housing for single officers, the castle-like building was designed to imitate the building on the logo of the Army Corps of Engineers, the boarded up buildings surrounding the soccer field (formerly the parade ground) were barracks, the nice house with the columns was where the commanding officer lived and the final two shots are homes for married enlisted men.

Photos of the unfinished Civil War era fort will be posted tomorrow.
