Fort Totten Park - Endicott Battery

03/31/07

in New York City - Queens

Behind the unfinished Civil War era fort is a large man-made hill which hides the remains of this Endicott Battery. An Endicott is a large piece of artillery which pops up, fires, and then recoils back down behind the hill to be reloaded. It probably looked something like this or this when it was active. Today it's just overgrown concrete ruins protected by a chain link fence. I believe the hatch-like thing in the second image connects directly to the tunnel with the Spanish-American war graffiti.
