This statue at the top of St. Paul's Civil War monument (across the street from the Cathedral) is purported to be that of the first person to sign up to serve in the First Minnesota, which is arguably the first regiment raised for the Union after Lincoln's original call for volunteers. That would make the soldier modeled here the very first US Civil War volunteer.
