Roosevelt Island Lighthouse

01/17/05

in Other

This lighthouse at the northern tip of Roosevelt Island was built in 1872 by the same man who designed St. Patrick's Cathedral. It was placed here to help ships get through the dangerous Hell's Gate of the East River. It seems to be mostly decorative today and the lantern room at the top emits an electronic glow as opposed to the traditional rotating Fresnel lens.
